Originating in Brazil, MapBiomas is now active in 17 countries, covering all of South America and Indonesia, and recently expanding into Africa and Central America. The network is built on open science and collaboration, utilizing a platform that integrates satellite imagery, machine learning, and cloud computing. All data, maps, methods, and code are freely and publicly available. The information generated by the MapBiomas network can be used by decision-makers, policymakers, researchers across various disciplines, educators and students, civil society organizations, and businesses.

OUR MISSION
Mapping transformations of the Surinamese territory through science—with precision, speed, and quality—and thereby making knowledge about land cover and land use accessible. We aim to improve decision-making processes in areas such as nature conservation, sustainable natural resource management, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE INITIATIVE

Collaboration with academic institutions, NGOs, and technology companies from various regions of the country and around diverse themes.
Decentralized and automated data processing in the cloud through a collaboration with Google Earth Engine.
The platform is accessible to all users, who have access to both the data and the methodology.
Data are published immediately after generation, with the limitations of the information explicitly stated. At the same time, we receive suggestions for adjustments and improvements from users; these are reviewed by our teams and contribute to further improvements.

ORIGIN
MapBiomas originated in Brazil during a seminar held in São Paulo in March 2015. Specialists in remote sensing and vegetation mapping were invited by the Climate Observatory’s SEEG (System for Estimating Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals). The aim was to address a fundamental question: how could annual land-use and land-cover maps for all of Brazil be produced in a way that was significantly cheaper, faster, and more up-to-date than existing methods, while also capturing historical trends over recent decades? This required unprecedented processing capacity, a high degree of process automation, and collaboration among a community of experts across the relevant fields. Consequently, a technical partnership with Google was established, leveraging the Google Earth Engine platform and involving training sessions in Mountain View, California.

MapBiomas Suriname is a scientific collaboration among multiple institutions dedicated to mapping and monitoring land cover and land use changes across the country. As part of the global MapBiomas network, MapBiomas Suriname is coordinated by the Mulokot Foundation (acting as fiscal sponsor) and the MapBiomas Suriname team. Our mission is to build local capacity in remote sensing and cloud computing in order to produce useful, up-to-date, and highly accurate geographic data specifically tailored to Suriname's unique ecological and socio-economic context.

MapBiomas is een wereldwijd netwerk van universiteiten, ngo’s en technologiebedrijven dat veranderingen in landbedekking en landgebruik – en de gevolgen daarvan – in kaart brengt en monitort.
